What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses visual and tactile media as a means of self expression and communication. Art therapists aim to support people of all ages and abilities and at all stages of life, to discover an outlet for often complex and confusing feelings, and foster self awareness and growth.

Art therapy is a transformative journey that originated from the groundbreaking work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, blending psychology with visual expression.

“To paint what we see before us is different from painting what we see within.”
— Carl Jung

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help people process and recover from traumatic or distressing life experiences. It is widely used within NHS services, hospitals, and trauma clinics around the world, and is recommended by leading clinical guidelines for the treatment of trauma.

EMDR works by using guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, to support the brain’s natural ability to reprocess and integrate difficult memories. Rather than requiring detailed discussion of traumatic events, it helps reduce the emotional intensity attached to them, allowing memories to feel more distant and less overwhelming.

Over time, EMDR can support significant reductions in symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts, while promoting emotional stability, resilience, and a greater sense of control and wellbeing.

Do I need to be good at art to be in art therapy?

Engaging in art therapy doesn’t demand artistic expertise. The focus is on the process of creating rather than the artistic skills; it simply invites you to embrace art materials and witness the evolving creative journey, which can be quite delightful and wonderfully unexpected. At times, you might just feel like having a casual chat, and that’s absolutely okay.

Whether you prefer artistic exploration or sharing your thoughts verbally, they’re all valid expression.

Trauma-Informed

I specialise in trauma-informed art therapy, offering non-verbal and creative approaches that support emotional healing and regulation.

My practice integrates a somatic approach, informed by CPD training and masterclasses in felt sense and clay field work, which deepen my ability to work safely and effectively with trauma stored in the body.

I currently practice full time in a trauma-informed special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school in the UK.

UK (HCPC) Registered

I am a fully qualified Art psychotherapist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the UK's official regulatory body for health and care professionals.

I am also a full member of the EMDR UK and the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).

Multilingual Care & Cultural Identity Support

I offer sessions in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin to provide cultural and linguistic comfort for clients.

I specialise in supporting individuals navigating diaspora experiences, multicultural identities, and feelings of displacement or not belonging. My approach is person-centred and reflective, grounded in clinical expertise and lived experience. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space to explore the complexities of identity, culture, and belonging with sensitivity and care.

Flexible Online Sessions – Wherever You Are

All sessions are held online on Zoom, making therapy accessible no matter which part of the world you are.

My practice is designed to offer flexibility and consistency. I understand how difficult it can be to find the right therapist in your local area—especially someone who shares your language or cultural background.

Online sessions create the opportunity to connect in a safe, familiar space, without the added stress of travel or location limitations.

Chiu Ue Wan (MA, MSc, HCPC, EMDR)

Chiu Ue Wan, art psychotherapist and EMDR therapist

Chiu is an EMDR therapist and HCPC-registered art psychotherapist based in Newcastle, England.

Drawing on her teaching and living experiences in the UK, Chiu’s practice centres on the exploration of dysphoria and multicultural identity through art therapy. In early 2022, she founded Twin Voices Chinese School, bringing her passion for cultural education to life. Over the past five years, she has also provided art therapy—both one-to-one and in groups—across a diverse range of settings, including care homes, SEND schools, alternative provision units, day centres, and council services throughout England and Scotland. She currently practices with Children North East and Durham County Council.

Her art therapy approach is informed by Attachment-Based Psychodynamic theory, Person-Centred Practice, Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) and Trauma-Informed Art Therapy.

My belief lies in the immense power of empathy, active listening, and providing a safe and inclusive environment for each person. I’ve witnessed how art creation serves as a non-verbal avenue, offering glimpses into the subconscious and aiding in processing trauma.

“I am dedicated to adhering to ethical standards, aligning my practice with the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) code of ethics and principles of professional practice, as well as the standards set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).”
